Farewell Sequence

A Poem

Tight with love and poor with the rest of the world, goodbye is all we’ve left, save some images we might pull out when we’re alone, sometimes, and the surreality that surfaces here, still holding your hand as we get on the bus to the airport

won’t let go, or even send the tears till you step out of the glass steel building for the first snow of the year, the total rejection of a flawed visa and the home-going of the dream

until some new one, preferably with you in it, surfaces and then does its own shifting act, remolding the pieces till what it resembles is your next adventure into Pygmalion-hood, rescuing your self-perception from failing too hard, too fast

and lifting some garment along with the arm and hand attached, recognition I came here to do this with you, and send you off, and tell you to be safe, and promising the world that isn’t coming back.
