We are hardwired as humans to be concerned about our impact on the world around us. We want to believe that our actions have an impact and that we have some influence over the outcomes we see. But what if I told you that this is a myth? That no matter what you do, the world will keep spinning and the status quo will remain the same. Would you still be concerned about your influence?
Before you accuse me of being a cynical nihilist, please hear me out. I am not suggesting that you abandon your efforts to make the world a better place. I’m simply arguing that we should abandon the notion that we are solely responsible for the state of the world. There are numerous factors at work, many of which are beyond our control. It’s time to stop blaming ourselves for everything that goes wrong and accept the status quo as it is.

That isn’t to say we shouldn’t make changes in our own lives to lessen our impact. However, we must recognize that our individual actions will not solve the world’s problems. It’s time to stop blaming individuals and start demanding systemic change from those in power.
I understand what you’re thinking. “But nothing would change if we all stopped caring about our impact!” That is not always the case. It is possible to be concerned about our impact on the world without placing all of the blame and responsibility on ourselves. We can ask those in…
