Which — when it comes to learning — means that the knowledge you’ve acquired in all the post-graduate training programs you’ve attended need to be transformed into experiential learning efforts that help us do three things:

If we want to acquire the new knowledge and develop the complex new skills this century is demanding, we need the support of good thought partners and learning companions. We need people who are capable of guiding, supporting, encouraging and challenging us while we’re implementing our ownb self-diredcted learning journey.

Developing ‘Front-End Knowledge

If, as an individual, you’re at a vital crossroads and don’t know which path to choose, it may be time to develop the sophisticated performance and meaning-making knowledge that the 21st Century’s newest opportunities require. Learn to invest in your own success by acquiring the knowledge you need to understand and compete in today’s new world.

These days, successful adults are distinguished by their ability to handle the demands of their career, by their ability to master today’s complex new tasks, and by their talent for creating innovative solutions to their life’s newest challenges. Essentially, they’re marked by their ability to adapt to changing circumstances. And — though it never is phrased quite this way — by their ability to learn.

Today, each of us needs to know how to create, design, and implement our own personalized, experience-based, self-directed skill-building programs. We need to know how to leverage the knowledge we’ve acquired in ways that lets us Improve the skills we have, develop new skills, and reframe our outdated modes of thinking in ways that help us respond to today’s newest opportunities.

Building ‘Back-End’ Skills

Today, in addition to the knowledge we develop in high school and college, each of us also needs to know how to design and implement our own personalized Back-End learning programs. We need to know how to take the Front-End knowledge, perspectives, and insights we acquired in high school and college and use them as resources to help us transform our life’s experiences into effective self-directed learning opportunities.

Self-directed learning opportunities that move us closer to the careers we want and the lives we’re hoping for.

In this regard, we need to see our formal education for what it is; simply the first steps in a lifelong focus on learning. Our high school and college degrees, along with all the additional advanced educational accomplishments we stack up, must become the ‘Front-End’ of our lifelong learning adventure.

The self-directed learning experiments that we construct after college then can become the ‘Back End’ of our pursuit of new, more sophisticated perspectives and more advanced modes of thinking, feeling and acting.

Simply put, these days, we need develop two forms of learning: The Front-End learning processes that give us the knowledge and ideas we need, and the Back-End Self-Directed Learning processes that give us the work and life experiences we need.
