Financial Assistant Interview

Title: Financial Assistant

Company: TCF bank

Industry: Finance

I decided to pursue this interview on a financial assistant as this is the field that I look to go into and hopefully one day be at as good of a firm as TCF. The objective of this informational interview is for me to gain a better understanding on how the finance industry runs on a daily basis, from an inside source that experiences it on a daily basis. What I am most interested in is gaining knowledge and information on how to successfully and efficiently in a business setting, more specifically in the financial industry. Additionally, the importance of these informational interviews are you can gain valuable tools and skills that would help you further develop on your career path.

“So I first gained interest in the company when I went to the University of Minnesota job fair. They had plenty of openings available for multiple different titles, but the one that gained my interest of the bat was the financial assistant intern position. After speaking and meeting at the job fair, I filed my application, after later hearing back and doing an interview with the Human Resources. This experience as an intern was huge for me, and I instantly fell in love with the job. After doing two years of this internship, they soon offered me the job shortly after I graduated with my bachelors degree.”

“There are many skills that I would see as helpful or a benefit in this field, but one that I believe is most important would be communication. You deal with communication on a daily basis in the office, not only with different employees, but also other professionals from different companies, and sometimes even countries. It’s so important to be able to effectively communicate your point across, you could be the most talented financial aid, but if you can’t describe to people your meaning or objective, it may be hard for people to find you credible or reliable.”

“Well the most common form of writing id say I do is professional emails. I am constantly writing emails on a daily basis, either to clients, my managers, to headquarters. This job requires extensive email receiving and sending, so it is very important I act as professional and appropriate as possible. Another important piece of writing would be business letters, usually sending out letters to new clients explaining to them what you and the company are all about, and what specialties you can offer them.”

“I would say most of our communication comes in the written form, that is emails, business letters, financial statements, and even social media. But don’t get me wrong oral communication comes and plays a big role too, just not as frequent. Day to day you often have to communicate and problem solve with other employees, which is crucial because two of you will often reach the same problem, so a lot of your workers already know how to problem solve.”

“If I could go back to when I was in the interviewing/job search process I’d definitely say that confidence would be most important. Companies are looking for someone they know they can rely on, and someone that isn’t going to get overwhelmed, or over stress themselves in difficult or hard times and tasks. Try to be calm and collective in your interview, it will make you seem more confident and ready for the role.”

“I’d have to say obviously they strongly view your experiences, to see if your capable and able to fill this role. With that I’d say in this field you really want to make sure you have as much communication experience as possible, I’ve known many people that have come in with 4.0 gpas, and are ridiculously talented, but they severely lack communication skills and experience, which employers often shy away from instantly as that is so crucial to the work area.”

This informational interview was a huge benefit for me and I truly believe I’ve learned many helpful tips and tricks that will better prepare me for work in this industry. Learning how the hiring process works and unfolds is very helpful, especially now that I know exactly what employers are looking for in a young educated college student. It was very surprising to me how important communication actually is in the business setting, and how crucial it is to be able to effectively communicate your information to your fellow coworkers and management. The main idea I can take away from this is that many employers in this field are looking for a confident employee, who can handle difficult tasks thrown at them and are able to overcome many different obstacles, it’s not always how good your grades were in college, but how applicable you are in the field. I will defiantly start looking for more openings that offer me communication experience, and start to build my resume up off of that. I will also change my way of thinking when entering a interview, I know now that I need to focus and embrace my confidence and my attitude when giving an interview.
