Enjoying the Pool

They told Joe being a city pool lifeguard is boring, except for all the tail you score. And it’s true. Boredom city, unless you slip away with the mayor’s daughter and pump a load of baby Joes down…

The Process of Running a Smash Brothers Tournament

Intro:

Have you ever wanted to participate in a large gaming tournament? Ever wanted to feel the thrill of pro gaming? Now you can, as Sy and I are hosting Shasta’s FIRST PUBLIC Smash Bros Tournament on May 27th, 2019. We wanted to host a more accessible competition as some of the current competitions are held in places like Los Angeles, San Jose, Sacramento, etc. What we want to do is promote and host a more accessible competition for those who can’t make a drive to Los Angeles or Santa Cruz. How this will impact the community is by promoting more local tournaments and also provide more accessibility to tournaments. We can also bring people with the same interests together to create more bonds and friendships. How we plan to carry it out is by figuring out the specifics of the tournament and venue, raising funds, gathering hardware, advertising, find amenities, and lastly let it happen. How we will show our success is by streaming it and taking photos and videos of the event.

4/30/2019 Entry:

Currently, we have created a signup Google Forms and a flier to spread around the city. We’ve already given the fliers out to a few people and already have 6–7 signed up. The entrance fee was set to ten dollars, but for Shasta students it is free. The prize pool is $100 minimum, and it will increase if the number of participants decides so. We’ve chosen memorial day to hold it because many students don’t want to have to go to school on a weekend after a long week of school. What we still need to do is obtain the faculty password for the internet to make sure it’s suitable for streaming the event and also need to advertise to get the public in on this event.

5/7/2019 Entry:

We’ve literally arranged everything together. All we have left is advertising. I talked to school admin to allow people on the school during that weekend. People would have joined, but timing was so unfortunate that FamineCon was occurring on the same day. People are telling their friends, but we’ve only gotten one non-Shasta person to join. I mean, that’s something, but we’ve got ways to go in the next two weeks.

5/16/2019 Entry:

Advertising is hard. It really is. Its not the part where you gotta post and tell people. Its the part where you gotta get people to join. There’s FanimeCon in the way, people may be busy for the long weekend. Communication plays a huge part in this type of stuff. Luckily, we got a few more people to join. I told my old school friend about it and he spread it to his smash group. We are making changes to some payments because we need to break even and if we continue giving Shasta students free entry, we won’t make it.

TED Talk Entry: 5/23/2019

Have you ever needed to promote an event and get people to join? Maybe you organized an event before. You know how hard it is to advertise. If you haven’t, that’s fine. I’m going to talk about that. When I first started thinking about what I wanted to do for this project, I had two ideas in mind. I either was going to write something to upcoming high schoolers or do something related to gaming. Ms Casey told me that I could do something in gaming, so I ended up going with hosting a tournament. Why my friend and I wanted to do this was because there are many tournaments bigger but they are inaccessible to students like us. We wanted to bring the San Francisco and Bay Area gaming community together. Planning everything was easy, but when it got to advertising, we were pretty doomed. We dug and dug for Bay Area Discord servers and posted our tournament in there. There was one problem: It was FanimeCon on the day of the tournament. Everyone was going there instead. Throughout my project, i learned that communication is an improvable skill and is also very helpful in many different things in daily life.

Communication is key when you need to advertise for something. For example, I talked to my friends to see if they would like to join, as well as talking to a food truck owner. You really have to know who to talk to and not be afraid to meet people. This is because I needed more people to join the tournament, and where there’s people, there’s food. I learned that there are many different ways you can communicate about events. This subclaim connects to my thesis because without communicating, you’re gonna get nowhere if trying to promote an event.

Expanding your communication pool may be hard, but there are ways online to do it. I Google searched for some Bay Area Discord servers and i also Twitch streamed myself playing some Smash Bros. To my surprise, some of my friends from middle school went into my stream and that was a perfect chance for me to tell them about the tournament. With discord servers, you can promote something way more easily, I didn’t think discord could go that far, but it did and im glad i found that. I also didn’t think of twitch streaming as a form of advertising but when my friends came in, the light bulb lit up in my head. This connects to the thesis because social media can be a very powerful resource if used correctly to promote an event.

Promoting something may be hard but when you have communication and social media, everything will become simpler. You can use communications and social media in the future if you ever need to promote something on your own. Thank you.

Final Entry: 5/28/19

This entry I dont really care about any errors. Im doing this rushed but Im gonna talk about how the tournament went. I did a headcount the day before to get an idea of how many people would be there. We lost a lot of people, and only ended up with 10 people. Our break even point. I was so relieved after that. The taco food truck that came by was really good too. Ms Casey actually saved our whole project by coming to school for the day. Overall really happy with how it went, a lot of hype plays happened too.
