Confessions from my intimate life

Over the last decade, I have shared the most intimate details of my marriage publicly. The first time I stood in front of a room full of strangers and confessed the hardships of marriage, I wondered how the audience — filled with eager-eyed to-be-weds — would receive such a sobering witness.

Back in the day, people used to refer to this as the “sex talk” in the pre-requisite marriage preparation retreat that our Church hosts. As our story unfolds in front of these engaged couples, it’s clear that intimacy is much more than the birds and the bees.

As someone versed in facilitating large group audiences, I break the ice by telling the group that we were not nominated to give this speech based on our expertise in this area. We offer our testimony to help other couples succeed and learn from our own experiences.

Here are the intimacy tips I share with hundreds annually — told from the vantage of a regular married person.

There’s not a specific milestone that signifies the end of the honeymoon period. Still, for us, it was the transition from carefree living to being plagued by the burdens of adulting.
