MESSI CONQUERS HIS FINAL PEAK

The long-awaited moment is finally here with us, and praise for the G.O.A.T. is in full swing all around the world. After 63 matches, we finally have a winner of the 2022 Qatar World Cup. Argentina finally won the most prized title in the sports world against France, who happen to be the former champions. I am not a big football fan, but hey, it’s the World Cup, and it happens every four years, two hours would not hurt, right? Wrong! I was deeply hurt that France lost.

The match was so electric, and everyone was putting their best foot forward because their home nations’ happiness and pride were at stake. On one hand, Lionel Messi really wanted to hold that golden cup in his hands, and on the other, Kylian Mbappe was running faster than light to also try to write history for his nation. The Argentina team attacked fiercely at first, scoring two goals through Messi and Angel Di Maria, as if to tell their competition that they meant business and that they were here to win. By the time it was halftime, the scores were 2–0, the worst place to be as a team.

However, at halftime, the coach must have done something miraculous for his players and given the double potion of the secret dose to Kylian Mbappe. He came back and not only quickly scored the first goal, but also quickly evened the scores at 2–2, putting a smile of hope back on the faces of his countrymen. When watching the game, I suddenly stopped what I was I doing to really focus so that I wouldn't miss a single moment of the incredible plays that ensued after the second Mbappe goal.

It became even more interesting when it was fulltime and the score was still 2–2. However, during extra time, a goal was scored by each team, making it harder to predict who was going to win this match. I was still rooting for France. The score was now 3–3. That meant that they had to go into penalties, the least loved part of a match because the fate of a team gets reduced to sheer luck and chance. Each team has five chances to kick a penalty, and they have to use each one well, it could mean winning or losing. Mbappe kicks the first penalty, scores. Messi kicks the second one and scores. These two are really legends, they don’t miss.

Where it starts going south for France, is where they miss their next two penalty kicks while Argentina scores each time. It soon dawns on me, that we have already lost because there is no way France can make up for the missed penalties. When the final whistle is blown, the curtain falls on France and fireworks begin cracking for Argentina. To be fair, Messi does deserve the win, since this might be his last World Cup. I feel bad for Mbappe though, because every time he will score at PSG where he plays with Messi, will be pushing him closer to winning his 8th Ballon d’Or! What a twisted position to be in?

Nonetheless, congratulations Argentina for winning the 2022 Qatar World Cup.
