The Photo Album

Yellowed pages crinkled as my wife’s hands flipped through the photo album.

With each page turned, faces of family members locked in time looked up at us. Some gone, many thankfully still around. Dozens and dozens of photos, all showing a world that once was but is no longer.

What struck me most about this experience was the similarities all these family members shared. I know it’s a stupid thing to say, but family really does look like family. My wife’s aunts, all sharing similar smiles and eyes. These faces also passing into her cousins, now grown and with lives of their own. Her grandfather and grandmother’s faces blending into her dad’s as baby and a toddler, and now as a grown man. Nothing quite makes these similarities quite so obvious as a photo album.

I then thought: how many of these kinds of photo albums must exist? All across the world, or even just all across the country? How many individual people, will real lives and families, no only exist in the pages of a book?

I also wondered: Will our current age of digital photos and files living in “the cloud” do away with the joys of the photo album? Will they make a physical book holding so many memories and emotions obsolete? I can only say I hope not.
