Kathmandu and its unmanaged waste

Home to around 2.5 million people, Kathmandu also serves as a habitat to petroleum products, plastic bags, plastic straws, unmanaged wastes thrown haphazardly in streets. From the moment we wake up until we go to bed at night, we generate waste because we consume resources. Most of us in the cities prefer to drink coffee or tea. Have you ever wondered where the resources come from and where does it go? The answer is landfill site, situated few kilometers from Kathmandu valley. To prevent this, you can make a compost out of the coffee waste. Likewise, we all love tasty delicacies, don’t we? But again, the unwanted food gets leftover. You can do the same with food waste- make a compost.

In Kathmandu, you can see plastics inappropriately dumped everywhere in the roadsides, rivers. Always carry a bag with yourself when you head for shopping, even if it be while you are buying meat products. Instead of plastic straws, we can opt for paper, copper or metal straws. For example, even if you visit restaurants, always have a metal straw with yourself. These small acts if taken by 7 billion people in the world, it will definitely be a better place to live in.

Ethical consumption should be understood by every human being on this planet. Let’s not depend our happiness on materialistic things but rather utilizing our resources for a longer time. Let’s replace fast fashion with slow fashion. Wear that shoes for a year or two more than that would even be great. Let’s focus on our ‘needs’ rather than ‘wants’. Let’s support local brands.

So, think before buying any single-use product like bottles and straws. To bring a change, lets initiate by changing ourselves.
