Journalism and Digital Media

Over the past decade, journalism and digital media have become almost synonymous. Most if not all journalists have come to the understanding that in order to succeed in the digital 21st century, you must adapt to the changes that have been brought about by advances in communication and technology. Today, the average newspaper journalist of the old days does not exist on a large scale. Writers began to utilize websites, social media sites, and blog/forum pages to get their message to the reader. Technology such as smart phones and tablets have made instant communication a strong reality. Journalists now understand that in a world where information moves at a hundred miles an hour, it is crucial to reach the audience as soon as physically and digitally possible. Blog sites have made it easy for a writer to create a profile and post whatever information they want. This has led to some dangerous changes in the news media, since now anybody is able to be whoever they want online. This has led to the creation of the phrase “fake news” amongst other common words and phrases used to describe content that is created to spread misinformation or propaganda. There have been many negative and many positive changes that journalism has experienced in the new digital era.

Over the next decade, I expect similar changes to come to the world of journalism due to the rapidly evolving world of technology. As digital media finds new mediums and outlets to be featured on, information will become even more widespread and accessible to people of all cultures throughout the world. This will lead to many more issues, but will also unquestionably lead to more important and positive developments in the way humans can communicate. As a journalism major, I am excited to see what changes are brought about in the next 10 years.
