THE FASCINATING HISTORY AND EXCITING FUTURE OF ROBOTIC SURGERY

Realizing the scope and potential benefits of introducing industrial robots in surgery , NASA also got on board in the late 1980s. A group of NASA researchers became interested in integrating the virtual reality technology with surgical robots to develop telesurgery. In the early 1990s, the group joined forces with Stanford Research Institute (SRI) to work hand in hand with SRI’s robotics and virtual reality experts. As a result, they were able to create a dexterous telemanipulator for hand surgery. The robot allowed the surgeons to feel as if they were operating directly on the patient instead of performing the operation from the other side if the room.

In 2000, the production of Da Vinci Surgery System broke new grounds by becoming the first FDA-approved system for general laparoscopic surgery. While its predecessors relied on using endoscopes, Da Vinci emerged as an all-encompassing system with camera and scopic utensils. Currently, the Da Vinci and Zeus surgical systems are ruling the realm of robotic surgery.

However, it is expected that these systems will eventually evolve into more powerful tools. It won’t be a stretch to say that surgical robotic technology is still in its infancy and the future looks considerably exciting.

The current advantages of robotic-assisted surgeries ensure that the technology will continue to evolve and develop. Experts believe that the future of surgical robots is “extremely exciting” and that the next generation of surgeons will highly benefit from it.
